War

Book Club?

The book club did not show up on time yesterday. I hope Jeff is okay. Here are my bullet points on The Sorrows of Empire by Chalmers Johnson.

- The false portrayal of SDI as the program that broke the back of the Soviet Union
- Military bases as colonial outposts
- The military as trainer of arrogance and racism
- NIE classification as an instrument of tyranny
- The role of racism WRT opposition to international oversight
- Suppression of information that makes the military look bad
- Use of Hollywood to promote military life
- Enlistment of natives in empire maintenance
- SOA Terror training
- Avoidance of congressional oversight
- Support for neo-fascism in Spain and Greece
- Neoliberalism as a means to impoverish the Third World
- Harlan Ullman's proposal for neural wave weapons
- Prediction of bankruptcy and collapse of pro-US regimes

Overall, I found the book to be a sobering antidote to the delusion that the US has no imperial attributes.
